Guddu’s New Life Experience!
January 8, 2018
Guddu, Operations Officer of Soulcial Trust in India, attended the Engage Disability Conference in Chennai, India and Soulcial Trust’s International Wheelchair Sports Exchange in Siem Reap, Cambodia in November 2017. For Guddu, this was both his first domestic flight within India and his first international flight, all within the span of a month. Here, Guddu details his new experience.
I used to see airplanes moving in the sky and I have always dreamt that one day I could be flying in one. When I was invited as a guest speaker to the 2nd National Engage Disability 2017 Conference in Chennai, I finally had the opportunity.
Michael Barrett, founder and director of Soulcial Trust, is my boss, good friend, and brother. When he agreed to send me to the conference, I was so happy because my dream had finally come true. Can you imagine what it feels like when someone helps you achieve something you have always dreamt about?
When I arrived in the Chennai airport, a driver was waiting for me with my name on a board. At first, I didn’t see him, but some friends were on the same flight with me and noticed. They said, “Look at you, a driver is waiting for you, big man!”
The driver took me to the hotel, which was the first I had ever stayed in. It was so cool and nice! I spent five days in Chennai before coming back to New Delhi to run a marathon. The same night of the marathon, I took my second flight ever, this time to Cambodia.
Cambodia was another new experience because it was the first time I’ve traveled out of India alone. I met with Michael and his family, and participated in the International Wheelchair Sports Exchange, where we played wheelchair basketball and rugby with people from Cambodia, India, and France! I was so happy to be there and have this new experience.
