Elie is a volunteer from Toulouse, France, who has been in Siem Reap since August 2017 and who volunteers with Soulcial Trust as a part-time coach of the Siem Reap wheelchair basketball team. Every other Friday morning, Elie works with the team to teach them the rules of wheelchair basketball and improve their technique. “The project is very interesting!” says Elie. “It’s very good to offer sport activity to people who never had this opportunity before, and who are often left on the side.”
Elie also volunteers with two other organizations, along with consulting work for a hotel in Siem Reap—in short, he’s a volunteer champion! “In this country, no volunteers = no changes! There is no money to pay every person involved in good projects like this one!”
Elie is one of many volunteers in Siem Reap and around the world who are invaluable to work being done by organizations abroad. If you’re interested in volunteering outside of your home country, visit Soulcial Trust’s online volunteering platform, www.soulcialtravel.com, which connects potential volunteers with small NGOs and social enterprises. We aim to make your experience abroad more meaningful for you and more impactful for small organizations.
