Paralympic qualifying game in Bangkok
March 26, 2018
Bangkok welcomed the 2018 Asian Para Games Wheelchair Basketball qualifying tournament from the 2nd to the 11th of March. The Battambang women’s team defended Cambodia’s colours. Our team in Siem Reap was only formed in September 2017 and is working toward qualifying for a top-level tournament. Although we did not participate, our two co-captains were given the opportunity to watch the final stages of the tournament. There were two main objectives during this trip for Bel and Sovantha: cheering enthusiastically for the Cambodian women’s team and learning by observing the best players in Asia.
The first objective was a total success for our two players, Sovantha and Bel, who provided strong support for Cambodia during all of their games. The shouting and cheering was justified: Cambodia qualified for their first Asian Para Games Wheelchair Basketball! We are hopeful that next time, both the women’s and the men’s teams will make it. Congratulations girls!
The second objective was also fulfilled. The best of the best wheelchair basketball teams gathered in Bangkok and the game level was really mind-blowing. Our two co-captains had the opportunity to study the best teams in the tournament from countries including China, Thailand, and Malaysia. It was a chance to discover new tactics and determine a new approach for trainings. “It is a really enriching experience, which will enable the team to be stronger,” says Sovantha, while Bel wants to “come back next year to win the whole thing. « Ambition is not missing, and neither is work ethic.
Finally, this tournament allowed our XLability project managers to connect with people who can collaborate on the project, especially for our wheelchair basketball development in India. We will keep you informed about the project’s progress on the website and in our next newsletters!
