GAEA Initiative: We Clean Our Streets
November 27, 2017
“Do you see why this is so important, right?”
GAEA, a rubbish collection company in Siem Reap and a collaborative partner of Soulcial Trust in its Green Influence programme, is trying to change habits by not only providing a service, but an educational opportunity. Every week, GAEA employees choose a street in need of garbage clean up and provide all the materials to clean the street with its residents. Through an active collaboration with communities, GAEA is appealing for a change of habits related to garbage disposal, focusing on the concepts of environmental protection and public health. GAEA also aims to create a relationship between itself and local residents, where both sides clarify each other’s doubts and concerns about trash in the city at the main stage of the problem, the streets of Siem Reap.
The location of the clean ups varies from high-visibility streets to residential secondary roads, the main criteria being the amount of rubbish that is not properly sealed in containers and frequently redistributed across the street by animals and passing traffic. Locals are encouraged to call the company if they feel that a clean-up near their residence might be necessary. People on the streets are also invited to join in and, collectively, make a difference in the environment.
Soulcial Trust members participated in one of the “We Clean Our Streets” days. Through our Green Influence programme, we work to raise awareness about environmental issues in Cambodia and India.
